JCDC at Selfridges

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac takes over the concept store at Selfridges with a great collection of homewares and fashion. The windows are something else, aliens with lit bulb eyes, beautiful poppy half tone illustrations and even a UFO that scarily looks like it might work.

Italian Hand Gestures

Our favourite souvenir from Milan had to be this beautiful little book, originally written and designed in 1963 by Bruno Munari and recently republished. Some classics and some new ones to confound your non Italian friends. Especially good for drivers stuck in traffic.

We know it's simple but...

we really like this jacket! We've always been a fan of the plain outside - opulent inside. From the Fred Perry/Liberty collaboration.

Pick Me Up

We like the 'Pick Me Up' contemporary graphic art fair at Somerset House. We gorged ourselves on the delicious Busaba canapes and brilliant selection of work on show at last nights private view. Rob Ryan has uprooted his studio and set up home in Somerset House for the exhibition alongside Print Club London who were printing live at last nights event. Most of the work is for sale including lots of affordable pieces from up-and-coming graphic artists.

Milan part 3 : Hotel RCA

Hotel RCA : beautiful space, beautiful show. Many favourites including Ioli Sifakaki's Tantalus dining ware/perfomance, Marc Trotereaus' Microsituations, and lovely musical tableware from Alexander Hulme.

Lightning and Kinglyface : Narcissus

Lovely Lightning and Kinglyface have created an installation in the basement of ad agency Fallon's offices on Great Titchfield St, based on the myth of Narcissus, in collaboration with photographer Thomas Brown. 'A photoshoot that grew into something completely different' was how Anna of the Lightnings described it to us - they created mirrored structures for a project with Brown, which evolved into this room sized piece. Meanwhile at the front of the space four exquisite prints of Browns photos take pride of place. Lightning and Kinglyface are going from strength to strength just now, having recently showcased work in Selfridges windows, and soon temporarily relocating to Milan to install some giant foam mushrooms and deliver some lectures in Italian to their lucky Italian fans on their practise.

Milan part 2 : Frederique Morrel

We couldn't help but like the work of Frederique Morrel. Which we saw as part of the show that Spazio Rossana Orlandi holds each year as part of I Saloni. The duo create beautiful sculptures using found tapestries which they source themselves, or are given by friends - each piece is unique. According to the designers themselves, their work is "our personal answer designed to re-enchant the world, using our special ingredients: materials that tell stories of simple, ideal happiness."

Milan part 1 : Rolf Sachs

We like the Rolf Sachs show 'flawLESS imPERFECTions' at Studio Visconti on corso Monforte in Milan. Some old favourites mingled with some new works in a beautiful pallazzo or villa type space. We enjoyed a lot of this kind of juxtaposition in Milano. In particular we all fell in love with the giant courtyard surrounded by buildings - it was the size of a proper park. The work itself included some beautiful one way mirrored bell jars lit from within, so you could only see their contents when the light was on, and a fantastic lit laboratory. Small but perfectly formed, well done Rolf Sachs.

Back From Milan!

We like being home! Two extra nights, a 15 hour minibus ride, a 7 hour ferry journey, and a 2 hour cab ride later, We Like This Too finally made it back from Milan Furniture Fair in true post-ash cloud style. We were lucky to get back as easily as we did - there are people still stuck there with little chance of getting home soon. And we were amongst good friends, one of whom had the Italian and the connections to get us our minubus. We'll be posting about the fair itself over the next few days.
