Hussein Chalayan: B-Sides

Thanks very much to Spring Projects for the invite to this lovely private view of some new work and some old (ish) by the prolific Mr Chalayan. A sweet family atmosphere prevailed at the show, in spite of the throngs of people - it seemed somehow intimate and full of friends. And possibly our favourite celeb spot ever when we saw Zaha Hadid being led through the crowd by Hussein himself. B-sides is on until October 23 at Spring Projects, Spring Place in Kentish Town.

Spencer Bewley

We saw, and loved, Hope Sandoval last night at beautiful Bush Hall. We especially loved the projections by Spencer Bewley, a projection artist who works with 'found and prepared 16mm films' which he overlays over one another using multiple projectors, slowed down, sometimes with colour filters. It made us think of Kenneth Anger, or even Derek Jarman, and the work he did providing super 8 backdrops for shows in the late 80s. Photos by Luz Gallardo and Voss

Kenneth Anger at Spruth Magers

Renowned 60s avant garde film maker and, weirdly, Hollywood gossip hound Kenneth Anger has just opened a show at Spruth Magers gallery at the end of Dover St. Expect beautiful and disturbing montages of tough bikers and glamorous oblivious women superimposed with occult and Satanist imagery, set to a seemingly unrelated rock and roll soundtrack. Ah the late 1960s, when rock was still regarded by the establishment as a dangerous and revolutionary influence. A particularly satanic Mick Jagger provides the soundtrack to Invocation of My Demon Brother, one fo the films featured here.
